Google TV Gemini update is reshaping how people watch, search and create content on their televisions.
Google has begun rolling out a major update to Google TV that adds a dedicated home-screen row for YouTube Shorts, labelled "Short videos for you", letting viewers jump straight into vertical clips without opening the YouTube app.
The Shorts feed will start appearing on Google TV devices in the US this summer, with the company expected to expand availability over time.
The Google TV Gemini update also introduces a new Gemini tab with a Create button, placing AI-powered tools alongside traditional streaming recommendations. Google says this experience is designed for the living-room screen, encouraging people to discover content, experiment with AI and revisit personal media from one interface.
At the heart of the Google TV Gemini update are two generative models: Nano Banana for images and Veo for video. Nano Banana lets users edit or generate images on the TV using simple voice prompts, including changing backgrounds, tweaking details or creating entirely new visuals from scratch. Veo can generate short clips from text descriptions or animate existing photos, adding motion based on what the viewer asks Gemini to create.
Both Nano Banana and Veo are rolling out first on Gemini-enabled TCL Google TV devices in the US, accessed through the Gemini tab, before a wider release to other partners at a later date. Google originally previewed these capabilities at CES 2026, positioning them as a way to bring creation tools into the living room without needing a phone or PC.
The Google TV Gemini update also upgrades the Google Photos experience on TV. Viewers can now use natural voice queries to search their Photos library for specific trips, people or events, with results appearing in an easy-to-browse carousel and full-screen viewer. A new Photos Remix feature allows users to apply artistic styles such as watercolour or oil-painting effects to images directly on the television.
Dynamic slideshows turn albums into colourful, collage-style displays, with cinematic transitions that play as ambient visuals in the background. While Photos voice search and Remix are rolling out first on Gemini-enabled devices in the US, Google says the dynamic slideshow experience will be available on supported Google TV sets globally.
With the Google TV Gemini update, Google is moving beyond passive streaming to offer a more interactive, AI-driven TV experience that blends YouTube Shorts, creative tools and personal memories on one screen. For now, the most advanced features are limited to Gemini-enabled TCL models in the US, but the direction is clear: the television is becoming a canvas for creation as much as a window for watching.
