Human Vapor OTT release date is now confirmed, and the series is heading to Netflix with a dark, unsettling twist on a Japanese cult classic.
Human Vapor will premiere globally on Netflix on 2 July 2026, streaming as an eight-episode limited sci-fi thriller series. The show will be available in multiple languages, including Japanese, English and Hindi, as part of Netflix's international line-up.
The series marks Netflix's first collaboration with Japanese studio Toho on this property, giving the streamer exclusive worldwide distribution rights. For viewers, that means no regional delay: Human Vapor drops on the same date in all major markets.
Inspired by Toho's 1960 tokusatsu film The Human Vapor, the new series shifts the premise into a modern crime-thriller setting. It opens with a shocking live television broadcast in which a person suddenly swells and explodes, triggering national panic and a high-stakes investigation.
At the centre is a mysterious killer who can transform into gas, slip through sealed spaces and carry out public murders while evading capture. The reboot leans into psychological horror and large-scale visual effects, aiming to revive Toho's practical-effects legacy with contemporary VFX.

Human Vapor is written by Yeon Sang-ho, known for Train to Busan and Hellbound, alongside co-writer Ryu Yong-jae. Shinzo Katayama directs, with Toho Studios and Korean company Wow Point co-producing in a rare Japan-Korea genre partnership.
The cast is led by Shun Oguri and Yu Aoi, reunited in live action for the first time in more than two decades, with Suzu Hirose, Kento Hayashi, UTA and Yutaka Takenouchi in key roles. Netflix and the producers are positioning the series as a flagship Asian thriller, hoping its mix of cross-border talent and a cult IP will cut through in a crowded OTT market when it lands on 2 July.
