IOS 27 supported devices could mark a sharp break with Apple's older iPhones, as the company prepares a major AI-focused software overhaul at WWDC 2026.
Leaks suggest iOS 27 will not be made available for the iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, iPhone 11 Pro Max and the second-generation iPhone SE, ending updates for millions of users worldwide. If that holds, Apple's next mobile operating system will require at least an iPhone 12, effectively drawing the line at devices powered by the A14 chip and newer.
In practice, the iOS 27 supported devices list is expected to include the iPhone 12, 12 mini, 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max; the full iPhone 13, 14, 15 and 16 ranges; the upcoming iPhone 17 family; and Apple's next iPhone 18 series, which should ship with iOS 27 pre-installed. The third- and fourth-generation iPhone SE models are also tipped to stay on the update track, while the older SE 2 drops off.
Beyond the iOS 27 supported devices list, the update itself is shaping up to be one of the most ambitious in years, with Apple expected to put artificial intelligence at the centre of the experience. At its WWDC 2026 keynote on 8 June, Apple is widely expected to unveil a dramatically revamped Siri, powered by what the company brands as Apple Intelligence.
Reports point to a more conversational, context-aware Siri that can handle multi-step requests, tap into on-device data more intelligently and integrate more closely with third-party services. Visual intelligence tools, upgraded home-screen customisation and refinements to Apple's "Liquid Glass" design language are also rumoured, though some of the most advanced Apple Intelligence capabilities may be restricted to premium hardware such as the iPhone 15 Pro and newer flagships.
Crucially, Apple has not confirmed the final iOS 27 supported devices matrix or any feature list, and details could still change before the software's expected public release later in 2026. Even so, the direction of travel is clear: as Apple leans harder into AI, older iPhones are increasingly likely to be left behind in favour of models with stronger on-device processing and newer modems.
For owners of an iPhone 11 or second-generation iPhone SE, the looming end of major updates may prompt an upgrade decision sooner than planned, especially if core Siri improvements and Apple Intelligence tools never arrive for those devices. For users already on the iPhone 12 generation and beyond, iOS 27 looks set to be a pivotal, if demanding, chapter in Apple's shift to an AI-first iPhone era.
