iPhone Fold 3D printed hinge delivers stunning crease breakthrough

IPhone Fold 3D printed hinge is at the heart of Apple's most ambitious redesign in years, if a series of leaks from China are to be believed.

Apple's first foldable iPhone, widely referred to as the iPhone Fold or iPhone Ultra, is expected to debut around late 2026 alongside the iPhone 18 Pro range. A Weibo post by tipster Fixed Focus Digital suggests Apple will use 3D-printed materials in the hinge assembly to keep the crease on the inner display as unobtrusive as possible. Apple already employs 3D printing for Apple Watch cases and even the USB-C port on the iPhone Air, hinting at growing confidence with the technology in mass production.

According to reports, Apple's 3D printed hinge would allow far tighter tolerances than conventional machining, helping the folding screen sit more evenly over the mechanism and therefore crease less over time. The company is also said to be targeting improved durability, with leaks mentioning the possible use of premium materials such as liquid metal in the hinge structure. If accurate, Apple would join brands such as Oppo, whose Find N6 uses a 3D-printed photo-polymer around the hinge to deliver what it markets as a "zero-feel" crease.

The display itself is rumoured to sit between dual layers of ultra-thin glass (UTG) and ultra-flexible glass (UFG), preventing the panel from directly touching the hinge when the phone folds. This layered approach is expected to reduce mechanical stress on the OLED screen and could help the crease remain shallower and less visible across years of use. Some reports even point to self-healing glass on higher-end configurations, designed to mask fine scratches and micro-marks that build up through repeated folding.

On the supply side, Apple is reportedly readying orders for up to 20 million foldable panels from Samsung Display, a marked increase on early expectations and a sign that the company sees strong demand for its first foldable. Analysts expect the iPhone Fold to be positioned against Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold line, but with Apple betting that its hinge engineering and dual-glass design will set a new benchmark for crease control. If these leaks hold, the iPhone Fold 3D printed hinge could mark the point where foldable phones stop feeling like fragile experiments and start looking like mainstream iPhones that just happen to bend.
