Jio launches free incoming SMS for people travelling abroad

Jio launches free incoming SMS for people travelling abroad and it is set to ease a familiar pain point for Indians who travel overseas but still depend on their domestic number for banking and logins.

Reliance Jio is now allowing subscribers to receive incoming text messages over Wi-Fi calling (VoWiFi) at no extra cost, even when they have not activated an international roaming (IR) pack.

According to multiple reports, the new facility routes SMS messages over any available Wi-Fi network, working independently of foreign SIM cards, partner roaming networks or add-on IR packs. Users on an active Jio domestic base recharge can continue to receive critical alerts such as bank one-time passwords, transaction messages and service verification codes while outside India.

The feature relies on Jio's existing VoWiFi infrastructure and does not need separate activation by the operator. Travellers must connect their VoWiFi-supported smartphone to a stable Wi-Fi network at a hotel, airport, café or office, then enable Wi-Fi Calling in their device settings; once switched on, incoming SMS begin arriving over the Wi-Fi connection.

Until now, Jio customers typically had to pay for roaming packs simply to remain reachable for OTPs and alerts tied to their Indian mobile number. By removing roaming charges for incoming texts delivered via Wi-Fi, the operator is targeting frequent flyers and occasional travellers alike, for whom missing an OTP can mean failed payments, blocked logins or delays in authorising high-value transactions.

The convenience does come with some basic conditions: subscribers must keep a valid Jio base plan active, use a handset that supports VoWiFi and have access to reliable broadband. Outgoing calls and mobile data abroad still fall under standard international roaming arrangements, so the new benefit is narrowly focused on making sure essential incoming SMS continue to get through.

For many Indians who juggle work trips, family visits or holidays abroad, this modest tweak could quietly remove one of the more frustrating aspects of travel. By tying Jio free incoming SMS abroad to VoWiFi rather than expensive roaming packs, the company is betting that peace of mind on banking and security messages will matter more than ever in a world where almost every important service still leans on a single registered mobile number.
