Karan Johar Instagram unfollow activity has set social media buzzing after fans spotted a drastic clean-up of the filmmaker's following list on Instagram.
Filmmaker Karan Johar, who has over 17 million followers on Instagram, recently reduced the number of accounts he follows to around 78, triggering intense speculation among fans and industry watchers.
Names missing from his following list include long-time friends and collaborators Shah Rukh Khan, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan, Sidharth Malhotra, Manish Malhotra, Malaika Arora, Ananya Panday and Kartik Aaryan, who is slated to headline his upcoming production Naagzilla.
The move stood out because many of those unfollowed are closely associated with Johar's banner Dharma Productions and his flagship films such as Student of the Year.
In contrast, Priyanka Chopra Jonas remains among the few high-profile celebrities he still follows, alongside Dharma CEO Apoorva Mehta and businessman Adar Poonawalla, a detail that further fuelled online chatter.
After a day of speculation, Johar broke his silence and described the unfollow spree as part of a broader "digital detox", insisting it was not about personal fallouts.
"It's a DIGITAL DETOX!!!! Am unfollowing everyone to reduce my time and energy spent on the gram!!! This can't be national news for god's sake… please clickbait something else! This is irrelevant!" he wrote in a now widely-shared Instagram note.
Johar has spoken before about stepping back from online noise, earlier announcing week-long breaks from social media to avoid "doom scrolling" and constant scrutiny.
He has also previously quit Twitter citing toxicity, choosing instead to remain active mainly on Instagram for film promotions, fashion posts and glimpses of his children Roohi and Yash.
Whether Karan Johar's Instagram unfollow drive is simply a pragmatic attempt to reclaim time and mental space online, or unintentionally a public signal about shifting equations in Bollywood, remains open to interpretation.
