One person was killed and 20 others were injured after an ST bus met with an accident on the Kalyan-Ahmednagar National Highway near Junnar on Sunday evening.
The accident took place near a petrol pump in the Alephata area after the driver allegedly lost his control of the vehicle. The bus drifted the road and overturned in an open field.
The deceased has been identified as Bhimdev L. Wagh aged 45 who was a resident of Ambavati and the driver of the bus. He died in the accident, officials said.
Police said the bus was heading towards Ahmednagar when the accident occurred. The exact cause of the crash is being investigated.
At least 20 passengers have sustained injuries in the accident. The injured people were residents from Beed, Dongarwadi, Sangamner, Manchar, Pathardi, Buldhana, Devde and other areas.
The injured passengers were shifted for medical treatment with the help of locals and emergency teams. Some passengers suffered serious injuries, while others sustained minor wounds.
After the accident happened, the local residents rushed to the spot and helped to pull passengers out of the damaged bus. Police and the rescue teams later reached the scene and assisted in shifting the injured to the nearby hospitals.
Traffic movement on the highway was affected for some time due to the accident and rescue work.
Police have started an inquiry into the incident. Officials are checking whether speeding, mechanical failure or road conditions contributed to the accident.
