Pune: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC)'s public parking lot business is bleeding money, with a dozen contractors sitting on unpaid rent that has now piled up to over ₹86 lakh, even as the civic body scrambles to bring the defaulters back in line.
Of the 31 public parking lots run under PMC's control, 27 are currently functional while 4 remain shut. Among the 27 operational lots, 12 contractors have gone more than a month without paying their monthly rent, letting their combined dues balloon to ₹86,70,699 as of June 2026.
The defaulters are private contractors who operate PMC's public parking lots under lease arrangements, paying the civic body a fixed monthly rent in return. The PMC administration, which manages and monitors these contracts, is now under pressure to recover the outstanding amount.
The parking lots in question are spread across Pune, forming part of the 31 public parking facilities that fall under PMC's jurisdiction.
The dues have been accumulating over more than a month, with the latest tally reflecting the outstanding position as of June 2026.
Unpaid rent from parking contractors directly eats into PMC's revenue, money the civic body depends on for its own operations and civic projects. The scale of the default is also striking, official data shows only three of the 27 operational lots have a completely clean record with zero arrears, and just a single contractor has gone as far as paying rent in advance. That leaves the overwhelming majority of the lots either behind on payments or barely managing to keep up.
The administration has issued warnings of strict action against contractors who continue to default, aiming to plug the revenue leakage and push operators back toward timely payments. What form that action will take, and whether it will include penalties, termination of contracts, or blacklisting of repeat defaulters, has not yet been detailed.
For now, the mismatch is stark, PMC counting on parking revenue as a steady income stream, and a contractor base where clean payment records are the exception rather than the rule.
