Pune Leads Maharashtra in Digital Census Self-Enumeration

Pune Leads Maharashtra in Digital Census Self-Enumeration

With more than 1.53 lakh residents having put in their census particulars online from May 1 to the 15th, the Pune district has put itself at the head of the pack in Maharashtra for digital self-enumeration.

It is a notable moment for India's Census initiative and one that bodes well for the door-to-door survey to come.

A Digital Success Story
The numbers tell a story of robust citizen buy-in to the new way of doing things. Vijay Landge, Deputy Commissioner and head of the Census Department at the Pune Municipal Corporation, says the modernized process has been well received. "It shows the public is ready to get on board with innovative government procedures," he said, pointing out how this digital-first method has made the first leg of data collection much smoother.

While Pune has taken the top spot, Mumbai Suburban and Thane are not far behind in second and third place. In all, some 11 lakh families throughout the state have made use of the online facility.

Physical Survey Now Underway
Now that the online portion is done, we have moved on to the physical side of the housing census which got under way on May 16. The aim here is to get a clear picture of living standards and residential conditions.

To handle the scale of the operation, the administration has put in place:
• 10,777 enumerators in the Pune district
• 1,800 supervisors to watch over the fieldwork

These men and women will be making their way from house to house with a set of some 33 or 34 questions to cover everything from amenities to the character of the home.

Ensuring Smooth Implementation
We have made a formal request of our residents for their full cooperation. And so that there is no question of transparency, every enumerator you meet will be in possession of an official identity card and a system-generated appointment letter as proof of who they are.

Legal Obligations and Compliance
Do not forget that there is a legal dimension to the census. As Deputy Commissioner Landge would have it, giving correct information is your statutory duty. He has cautioned that should you choose to withhold information or put forward false details, non-cognizable legal action is a possibility. The administration would prefer citizens to be candid and thorough so we can compile the data needed for national development.

What comes next
This housing survey is but the first part. The second phase, a more in-depth demographic analysis and population count, is on the books to run from February 10 to March 5, 2027.
