In a move which is focused at streamlining street vending and keeping backunauthorised activities, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) will introduce QR code-based licences for street vendors across the city.

This decision was announced by Mayor Manjusha Nagpure, seeks to formalise the sector by ensuring proper identification, verification, and regulation of vendors operating in public spaces.

Under this new system, all street vendors will has to go through police verification to establish their credentials. Eligible vendors will be then able to issue barcode or QR code-based identity cards.

These digital licences will include key details such as the type of business, permitted vending location, and personal information of the vendor. Authorities say this will make it easier to identify authorised vendors and take action against illegal operations.

The start is expected to bring greater transparency and responsibility to street vending in Pune. By creating a verified database, the PMC aims to regulate the sector more effectively while protecting the rights of legitimate vendors.

Officials believe the system will also help citizens and enforcement agencies quickly verify vendor credentials using digital tools.

Street vendor groups have promised in writing that they will follow rules like keeping the area clean, not throwing garbage, not blocking traffic, and cooperating with authorities.

The mayor has told officials to properly implement these rules so that street vending in Pune becomes more organised, clean, and well-regulated.
