Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha-Metro) has updated its proposal for the 40.9-km metro corridor between Bhakti Shakti Chowk and Chakan which aims to strengthen the connectivity between Pimpri-Chinchwad and the Chakan industrial hub.
The updated plan introduces major changes which includes a modified alignment, additional stations, and an upgrade to six-coach trains which will replace the earlier three-coach design to accommodate and manage future population growth and rising passenger demand.
Now as per the new order, the corridor will pass through Talawade Chowk and Bhosari, before extending to the Chakan MIDC area. The proposal is expected to be submitted to the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) for the approval soon.
The Bhakti Shakti Chowk - Chakan corridor is planned under the second phase of metro expansion, with most stations located within Pimpri-Chinchwad and a few falling under Chakan municipal limits.
Currently, the metro services are operational between Dapodi and Pimpri and the further work is ongoing to extend the line up to Bhakti Shakti Chowk in Nigdi.
The earlier project costed estimatedly around ₹10,383 crore. Officials indicate that the updated plan might see a slight increase in cost however the land acquisition requirements are expected to remain largely unchanged.
Officials said, the changes are being keept in mind for a long-term urban growth, industrial expansion, and increasing commuter demand in the region.
Once everything is approved, the project is expected to improve daily commuting, reducing traffic congestion, and strengthen connectivity between residential areas and one of the region's key industrial corridors.
