Sony physical game discs will be phased out for new PlayStation titles from January 2028, marking a major shift in how the company sells games.
Sony says the move reflects a growing preference for digital purchases, while existing disc-based games released before that date will remain unaffected.
From January 2028, new PlayStation games will be sold digitally through the PlayStation Store and through retailers offering digital codes. Sony has said the change applies only to new releases, not to games already out or scheduled for release before that date in disc form.
The company argues that the transition will let it align more closely with how most players access games today. It also points to a broader shift in the entertainment industry away from physical media.
The end of Sony physical game discs for new releases raises questions about resale, lending and long-term ownership. Physical games can be traded or shared, but digital titles are usually licensed rather than owned outright.
That concern is not theoretical. Sony has also announced closures of the PlayStation Store on PS3 and PS Vita, with some markets affected from August 2026 and broader shutdowns coming in July 2027.
Rockstar Games has already shown where the market is heading. Reports say physical editions of Grand Theft Auto VI will contain a download code rather than a playable disc, underlining the industry's digital shift.
Sony's decision to end physical game discs for new PlayStation titles from 2028 is a clear sign of where gaming distribution is headed. For many players, it may bring convenience. For collectors and preservation advocates, however, it is likely to be seen as a loss.
