Strengthening Passenger Amenities and Crowd Management Across Indian Railways

Pune Times Mirror 0 months ago

Indian Railways has significantly enhanced its focus on passenger convenience and safety by allocating over ₹34,000 crore during the last three financial years toward amenities and crowd management infrastructure.

This investment reflects a comprehensive strategy to address rising passenger volumes, particularly at high-footfall stations.

A key initiative includes the development of permanent holding areas at 76 identified stations nationwide, aimed at reducing platform congestion. Of these, 23 stations across Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Uttar Pradesh are currently under development.

These holding areas are designed as well-equipped spaces featuring seating, drinking water, sanitation facilities, ticketing services, information systems, and security infrastructure.

The recently commissioned facility at New Delhi Railway Station serves as a model, demonstrating improved passenger flow and enhanced convenience.

To further streamline station operations, access control measures are being implemented, allowing only passengers with confirmed tickets direct entry to platforms, while others are accommodated in designated waiting zones.

Infrastructure upgrades also include the introduction of wider foot-over-bridges to improve movement efficiency.
Technology integration plays a central role in this transformation.

AI-enabled CCTV systems, advanced digital communication tools, and centralized "war rooms" are being deployed for real-time monitoring and coordinated crowd management.

Additionally, QR-based identification systems and redesigned staff uniforms are being introduced to strengthen security and improve personnel visibility during critical situations.

Administrative reforms complement these efforts, with senior officers appointed as Station Directors at major stations. These officials are empowered to make immediate decisions, including regulating ticket sales based on station capacity and train availability.

Overall, these initiatives are progressing steadily at major stations such as Mumbai CST, Bandra Terminus, Bhopal, Lucknow, and Varanasi, ensuring preparedness ahead of peak travel periods. The measures underscore Indian Railways' commitment to delivering safer, more efficient, and passenger-friendly services.
