Sunetra Pawar Resigns from Rajya Sabha After Baramati Bypoll Victory

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Pawar has resigned from her Rajya Sabha seat after winning the Baramati Assembly by-election.

The resignation has been accepted by the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha.

Sunetra Pawar had recently secured a pivotal victory in the Baramati bypoll, which was necessitated following the demise of senior leader Ajit Pawar. As she has been elected as an MLA, she has now vacated her position in the Upper House of Parliament.

The by-election, held on April 23, showed Sunetra Pawar emerging as the clear winner when results were declared on May 4. She secured 2,18,969 votes, winning the seat by a massive margin of over 2.18 lakh votes.

Her nearest opponent, Prof. R.Y. Ghutukade, got only 935 votes, showing it was a very one-sided election.

There were 21 candidates in total, but big opposition parties like Congress, Shiv Sena (UBT), and Sharad Pawar's group did not contest. Congress had announced a candidate earlier but later withdrew.
