PCMC clears Rs 143 crore for 100-bed project
Thergaon will soon house a state-of-the-art cancer hospital, with the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) approving a Rs 143 crore project to be completed in two years.
The 10-storey facility, planned next to the existing Thergaon hospital, will offer 100 beds and advanced treatment facilities. Work orders have already been issued, paving the way for construction to begin shortly.
The hospital will be built under a public-private partnership on a design, build, finance, operate, transfer (DBFOT) model. This will be PCMC's first dedicated cancer hospital. The civic body had floated tenders twice before finalising the project. In the November 2024 tender, Apulki Healthcare Pvt Ltd qualified and was awarded the contract for 30 years. The agreement was signed after the commissioner's approval in December 2025, and the work order was issued on January 30, 2026.
Spread across 34,848 square feet, the hospital building will be completed within two years. The PCMC has sanctioned Rs 60.06 crore as viability gap funding, while the remaining expenditure will be borne by the contractor. Once the building is ready, patient services will commence immediately.
Advanced medical treatment
The hospital will be equipped with cutting-edge technology, including linear accelerators, brachytherapy units and PET-CT scanners. Cancer patients in the city will have access to modern treatment at affordable rates. PCMC's Health Officer Dr Laxman Gophane said the civic body is committed to strengthening medical facilities in the city.
Facilities
The hospital aims to provide comprehensive cancer care at subsidised rates, making treatment accessible to ordinary and economically weaker patients. Services will include chemotherapy, radiation therapy and surgeries, along with counselling and rehabilitation support. It will cater to breast, lung, colorectal, prostate and cervical cancers among others. Treatment charges will be aligned with the Mahatma Jyotiba Jan Arogya Yojana and central government health schemes, ensuring affordability.
Convenience for common patients
The hospital will come up on 35 gunthas of vacant land between Thergaon hospital and Shankar Gavade Kamgar Bhavan. The tender process stipulated that the contractor would build and operate the hospital for 30 years. Apulki Healthcare Pvt Ltd quoted Rs 60.06 crore, which PCMC agreed to provide as viability gap funding. The contractor will bear the remaining cost and operate the hospital strictly at rates fixed by the civic body. Officials claim the project will benefit poor and common patients once operational in two years.
Independent building
The contractor will construct the 10-storey building and install all required medical equipment. It will also provide doctors, nurses, ward staff and technical personnel. The construction period is two years, after which the hospital will be run by the contractor for 28 years. The PCMC will release Rs 60 crore in four instalments, with the final tranche paid only after patient services begin. Beyond this, no further funds will be provided by the civic body.
