A prisoner was allegedly assaulted by two fellow inmates at Yerawada Central Jail after a verbal spat over tobacco, police confirmed.
The incident took place on Wednesday morning near the washroom area of Barrack No. 2 in Circle No. 2.
According to police, the complainant was heading towards the loo when two inmates allegedly stopped him and authoritatively asked for tobacco.
An argument followed after he refused to give them the tobacco. Post the refusal the two accused allegedly assaulted him.
Police said the accused used a plastic bucket and other petite objects available in the cell to attack the prisoner.
Jail staff rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control. The injured inmate was given immediate medical treatment.
Senior jail officer Revanath Kande filed a complaint at Yerawada Police Station.
Police have registered a case against both accused inmates and further investigation is being conducted by Sub-Inspector Kundan Sarekar.
