On Monday evening, at age 15 years and 3 days old, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi came out to bat at the Barsapara Stadium in Guwahati. He demonstrated to the cricket world why the expectations surrounding him are warranted.
His innings of 52 runs from just 17 balls against Chennai Super Kings was not only winning his team a match or making him look like a great cricketer; it was also making his entire country very excited, while every expert is searching for words that best describe how special this performance was. Nandre Burger and Jofra Archer did an unbelievable job with the ball; they helped get CSK out to a very bad start with 3 wickets for 30 runs during the powerplay, and ended up with their team all out for only 127 runs from 19.4 overs.
The total gathered by CSK would have looked even lower after the way Sooryavanshi started hitting. After being dropped on the very first ball he faced by debutant Kartik Sharma on a very difficult catch at deep mid-wicket, Sooryavanshi proceeded to crush 4 fours and 5 sixes and score his half-century in only 15 balls, which is tied for the 3rd fastest ever in IPL.
Sooryavanshi, in an interview after the match, said: "There was supposed to be some cake cutting for my birthday, but I went to bed early to avoid the cake mess." He then discussed the power play and noted that it was always the team's intent to dominate it. Captain Riyan Parag added, "I watch him like everyone else in the crowd; I say to myself, 'how does he do that?'"
Michael Vaughan, a former captain for England, believes that Sooryavanshi should be called up to make his debut for India immediately. He urged the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) to include Sooryavanshi in the English white-ball series. "My thoughts are there's no doubt he has the ability," Vaughan said to Cricbuzz. Piyush Chawla, another former India player, agreed about Sooryavanshi after his IPL experiences: "That's the wonderful thing about the IPL; at 15 years of age, he's playing against top-level bowlers from around the world."
With still 13 games remaining this year, Tajpur's native Sooryavanshi has only just begun!
