YouTube Premium Auto Speed Brings Powerful New Time-Saving Boost

YouTube Premium Auto Speed has begun rolling out as an experimental tool for paying subscribers, promising to help people get through long videos faster without losing the thread of what is being said.

The feature sits alongside a new On-the-Go playback mode, which strips back on-screen clutter so that podcasts and talk shows are easier to control while you are walking or commuting.

Auto Speed dynamically adjusts playback speed during a video instead of locking viewers into a fixed rate such as 1.25x or 2x. YouTube says the aim is to save time "without sacrificing comprehension", slowing down in denser sections and speeding up when the content is simpler or has pauses.

The YouTube Premium Auto Speed option appears in the playback speed menu or in the app's experimental features section for eligible users. It is currently limited to supported videos, with early testing focused mainly on English-language content on Android and iOS, and it may not show up on every clip even for subscribers.

YouTube Premium's new On-the-Go mode is designed for audio-heavy videos such as podcasts, interviews and long discussions. It replaces comments and other visual distractions with larger, simpler controls that are easier to tap when you are on the move.

Users can enable On-the-Go manually from the player's settings under Premium controls, and YouTube may also prompt the mode automatically if it detects that a phone has been in motion for around 60 seconds while a video is playing with the screen unlocked. Although YouTube's own description lists it as Android-only, testing has shown the mode is also available on iOS devices.

Both YouTube Premium Auto Speed and On-the-Go are being offered as limited-time experiments for Premium subscribers until 27 April 2026, after which Google will decide whether to roll them out more broadly or drop them. The company has not yet said if either feature will come to desktop users.

For now, the tests underline YouTube's push to make its paid tier more attractive by cutting down wasted time and making long-form, audio-led content easier to handle on a phone. If YouTube Premium Auto Speed and On-the-Go prove popular, they could quietly change how millions of people watch everyday videos.
