Bengaluru: The National Law School of India University (NLSIU), Bengaluru, has cancelled its convocation scheduled for September 12, amid opposition from students and alumni to Chief Justice of India (CJI) Suryakant being invited as the chief guest.
The university announced the cancellation on Thursday, August 27. However, its notice did not mention the protests or the opposition to the CJI.
More than 700 current and former NLSIU students had objected to the invitation extended to CJI Suryakant and Bar Council of India (BCI) chairman Manan Kumar Mishra. The group included 574 current students and 128 alumni.
Those opposing the invitations had also demanded that the BCI issue an unconditional apology to students and faculty members of NALSAR, Hyderabad.
The cancellation comes amid a series of similar developments involving institutions and opposition to the CJI. According to the report, this is the fourth institution in the past month where a convocation has either been cancelled or its chief guest changed following opposition to the CJI.
