In a major development in state of Uttar Pradesh, Section 144 has been imposed in Rampur in light of Samajwadi party's protest on Thursday. The party has announced protest in Rampur after SP MP Azam Khan's son Abdullah Azam was arrested on Wednesday during a raid in Jauhar University. Speaking to Republic TV about the preparedness of Police, the district magistrate of Rampur AK Singh said,
"We have evidence and we are prepared because these people have neither informed nor taken permission for any protest. Section 144 (prohibits assembly of more than 5 people in an area) is already in place in view of Kanwar Yatra & Bakra Eid. We've got additional forces, we'll not let anyone enter from the border. Anyone who violates law & order will be dealt with strictness."
Reacting on the incident, Uttar Pradesh Minister Shrikant Sharma said that Samajwadi party has been involved in activities that are anti-people. "To fulfill personal demands, they have been in using people. In Uttar Pradesh, dadagiri dabangai will not work, if they(Samajwadi party netas) try to meddle with law then they will be punished. Azam Khan robbed lands of people in Rampur and now law and order is here so now they cannot threat people and they should help the procedures and action taken by intelligence agencies."
Jauhar University raided:
The Uttar Pradesh Police on Tuesday carried out raids at Mohammad Ali Jauhar University and recovered more than 100 expensive books allegedly stolen from other institutes in Rampur. Superintendent of Police (SP) Ajay Pal Sharma along with cops of several police stations and personnel of the Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) carried out the raid, which lasted for more than three hours. The search was conducted at Mumtaz Central Library
Azam Khan, his wife and son are all trustees in the University. Khan is the Chancellor of Mohammad Ali Jauhar University. According to police, an FIR was lodged at Thanaganj police station, claiming that several expensive books and manuscripts were stolen from Madrasa Aliya and other institutes in the city. Four people, who were working at the library, were taken to the police station for questioning.
Azam Khan's reaction
Amidst raids at Mohammad Ali Jauhar University, Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Azam Khan on Wednesday came down heavily on the administration and said they have "looted his university", while claiming that women professors at the institution were "heckled and abused" during raids. Khan also alleged that all this is happening against him because he defeated BJP's Jaya Prada in the Lok Sabha elections.
"My name has been added to the anti-land mafia portal. This dispute is about 3.75 bigha land. Will the trust, which is buying 400 acres land to make a university, commit fraud on 3.75 bigha land? Out of these 3.75 bigha land, there are many owners. These people have done registry and taken money via cheques from us," Khan told ANI .
He further accused the DM and SP and said that they made efforts to get him defeated in the Lok Sabha elections.
"They made many efforts, beat up people, arrested many, issued 77,000 red cards to families and asked them not to move out. They didn't come out. I was supposed to win by 4 lakh votes, but in the end won by over 1 lakh votes. They reduced the winning margin, but couldn't defeat me. Will they take revenge now from me? I have stolen books? They have pressurized people to complain against me," he said.
"They have looted my university. The university was supposed to open tomorrow. Where will 3,500 students go now? I have shut down medical college and hospital. I don't want to run it now... They have looted my antic books," Khan said.
Azam Khan's son detained
Samajwadi Party (SP) MLA Abdullah Azam Khan, son of senior SP leader Azam Khan, was detained by the police on Wednesday for creating an obstruction in the raids carried out at Jauhar University in Rampur.
SP Ajay Pal Sharma who is carrying out raids at the university, said, "Today while searching the administrative block of the university, we have found more books that were stolen from Madarsa Aliya. And for creating an obstruction in our raids, we have detained Abdullah Azam."
