GIRI Launches 37th Store in Perambur, Chennai: Spiritual Retail Brand Crosses 13 Outlets in the City

Retail Updates 3 days ago

GIRI, one of India's leading organised retail brands for spiritual and religious products, has inaugurated its 37th showroom - and 13th in Chennai - at Perambur, marking a deeper push into a city the brand already dominates.

The Perambur showroom offers an extensive range spanning pooja essentials, idols, festival products, organic foods, handicrafts, spiritual books and music, and traditional attire - the same curated format that has anchored GIRI's growth since 1951, when founder Tirupunithra Swarnagiri began as a pavement-side seller of pooja products and spiritual books in Chennai.

"Perambur is a vibrant community with deep cultural roots, and we are delighted to open our doors here," said the Management of Giri Trading Agency Private Limited in a statement.

"This showroom is more than a retail outlet - it is a cultural hub where devotees, shoppers, and families can engage with India's traditions in a modern, welcoming environment."

GIRI now operates showrooms across Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Telangana, Puducherry, Maharashtra, and New Delhi, with international reach into the USA, UK, Australia, and UAE.

In 2019, the company won the "Best Tourist Friendly Shopping Centre in Tamil Nadu" award.

The brand has built its moat the old-fashioned way - through depth of catalogue, authenticity of sourcing, and seven decades of trust among devotee households.

Editor's Note

India's religious and spiritual market is valued at approximately USD 70 Bn in 2025, projected to grow at a CAGR of 10% to touch USD 160 Bn by 2035.

Incense sticks (agarbattis) and idols remain the largest product categories by volume, with festive-season demand spiking sharply - BigBasket reported idol sales up 36% and pooja essentials up 128% during Durga Puja and Dussehra 2025 alone.

What makes this market distinct is its fragmentation.

The vast majority of India's spiritual retail is unorganised - neighbourhood pooja stores, temple-adjacent vendors, and seasonal stalls - leaving enormous white space for an organised, branded player.
