Thailand Songkran Festival 2026 Generates 30.35 Billion Baht in Tourism Revenue
Songkran Tourism Sees Growth Across Thailand with Strong Domestic and International Travel
The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has reported steady tourism activity nationwide during the Songkran Festival 2026, held from 11-15 April. The festival is projected to generate over 30.35 billion Baht in tourism revenue, marking a 6 per cent increase compared to the same period last year.
Thapanee KiatphaiboolAccording to TAT Governor Thapanee Kiatphaibool, the performance reflects continued interest in Thailand's cultural offerings and coordinated efforts between government bodies, private stakeholders, and local communities. The approach focuses on presenting Thai identity through traditions, cuisine, and creative experiences, while supporting long-term, sustainable tourism development.

In Bangkok, key celebration areas such as Silom Road, Siam Square, and Khao San Road recorded high footfall throughout the festival period. The Maha Songkran World Water Festival 2026 at Benjakitti Park attracted 108,640 visitors between 11 and 13 April, including 56,368 domestic and 52,272 international attendees, generating an estimated economic impact of 283.68 million Baht.

At Lumphini Park, the Saneh Art by Songkran Festival 2026 welcomed more than 94,546 visitors. Its programme, which included cultural and contemporary elements, saw notable participation from younger audiences.
Beyond the capital, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya continued to draw visitors with its "Songkran with Elephants" celebrations. In northern and north-eastern provinces, traditional practices such as water-pouring over Buddha images, cultural parades, and Rot Nam Dam Hua ceremonies remained central to the festivities. Dedicated water-play zones also attracted consistent visitor turnout, combining leisure with cultural participation.

In southern Thailand, Songkhla recorded an increase in tourism activity. The Sadao border crossing saw over 36,000 crossings between 10 and 12 April, largely driven by visitors from Malaysia. Average hotel occupancy in the area reached around 80 per cent. Total arrivals are projected at approximately 70,000, contributing an estimated 700 million Baht in tourism revenue.

Border towns in the Deep South, including Betong in Yala and Su-ngai Kolok in Narathiwat, extended celebrations into the evening with events such as "Suk Sanuk Songkran Chaaidaen Tai" and SUNGAIKOLOK Midnight Songkran 2026. These initiatives supported local engagement and diversified visitor experiences.

For the overall festival period, international arrivals are estimated at around 500,000 visitors, reflecting a 4 per cent increase year-on-year and generating approximately 8.1 billion Baht in revenue. Domestic travel is expected to reach 5.96 million trips, up by 7 per cent, contributing about 22.25 billion Baht.

Combined, these figures bring the total projected tourism revenue for Songkran 2026 to over 30.35 billion Baht, highlighting its continued role in supporting Thailand's tourism economy and regional distribution of visitors.
