- The origin of Labour Day is linked to the historic Haymarket Affair in Chicago, USA, in 1886.

- In 1889, the International Socialist Conference declared May 1 as International Workers' Day.
- In India, the first Labour Day celebration was held in Chennai in 1923 under the leadership of Singaravelu Chettiar.
