The closing rank for getting the IAS is not fixed and changes every year. It mainly depends on factors such as the number of vacancies available, the performance of candidates in the exam, and category-wise reservation.
Usually, candidates from the General category need to secure a rank within the top 70 to 90 to have a good chance of getting the IAS. However, the final closing rank may differ slightly depending on the number of posts in a particular year.
In recent years, the last rank for IAS in the General category was around 78. Meanwhile, the Indian Foreign Service (IFS) closed around 115, and the Indian Police Service (IPS) closed at approximately 232.
Candidates from OBC, SC, and ST categories may get IAS at slightly lower ranks because service allocation also depends on reservation rules and category-wise vacancies.
The UPSC Civil Services Examination is one of the most prestigious and competitive exams in India. Every year, lakhs of aspirants appear for the exam with the aim of joining top services such as IAS, IPS, and IFS.
The selection process is conducted in three stages - Preliminary exam, Main exam, and the Personality Test (Interview). After clearing all stages, candidates are allotted services based on their rank, category, preferences, and available vacancies.
