SHILLONG, April 7: In its 150th year of existence, Shillong's Gorkha Pathshala Higher Secondary School etched its name into the annals of Meghalaya's educational history on Tuesday, producing its first-ever SSLC state topper and signaling a power shift in the state's competitive academic landscape.

Wangaal Lama secured the first position with 97.5%, leading a trio of students from the institution into the Top 10. Aaditya Thapa and Sharat Chettri followed at seventh and eighth positions, respectively.
Lama, who arrived at the school unaware he had topped the state, described the moment as a dream. "I never thought I could achieve it. I gave my everything," he said. He stressed that students from community-aided schools or rural areas should not feel inferior to those in elite urban institutions. "What matters most is believing in yourself. Work hard, improve where you lack, and don't just be a bookworm. Understand what you study," Lama added.
Aaditya Thapa, who scored 94.83%, viewed the achievement as a matter of gratitude rather than personal glory. "It is not that we are making the school proud, as it is already respected. Instead, we are repaying the debt to the school," he said.
In a raw reflection on the pressure of the examinations, eighth-position-holder Sharat Chettri (94.67%) admitted his success was bittersweet. Despite the high rank, the aspiring chef spoke of "sadness and regret" regarding his preparation. "I procrastinated in the last week. I picked myself up and continued, but if I had been more consistent, I could have done even better," Chettri said.
The success of these three students, all from working-class backgrounds, marks a milestone for the 150-year-old institution. Principal Amit Thapa described the results as a historic moment that proves the school can compete with the state's long-established educational elite, expressing confidence that this breakthrough would inspire future batches.
