The clash not only marks the beginning of the tournament's Shillong leg but also reflects the growing stature of Meghalaya football, with three local clubs competing in Asia's oldest football tournament for the first time.
Shillong Lajong enter the tournament carrying the weight of expectation after reaching the semifinals in each of the last two editions, their best-ever performance in the competition. Head coach Birendra Thapa made it clear that the club's ambition this year is to go a step further.
"Every tournament you play, you don't play just to please the people and the fans. You want to win. You want to reach the final and lift the championship. Last time we lost in the semi-final. This time we want to reach the final and win it," Thapa said.Despite Lajong's experience, Thapa expects a stern challenge from their local rivals."They are a good side. They've signed many good players from Shillong. It will be a tough match, but we are going all out," he added.For Nongkseh SS&CC, the match represents a landmark moment in the club's history. Fresh from winning the Meghalaya State League, the side will make its Durand Cup debut, although several of its players are no strangers to the competition. Among them is captain Hardy Cliff Nongbri, who previously led Shillong Lajong to the semifinals in the 133rd edition and now prepares to face his former club."Shillong Lajong is a very good team. I know them very well because they were my teammates," Nongbri said.
Confident in his team's blend of youth and experience, he added, "We have experienced players, players who have played in the I-League and ISL. We also have a good combination of juniors and seniors. We'll give our best and we'll try to win."
Nongkseh head coach Joseph Naik believes his players have earned the opportunity to compete on the national stage."We're grateful for this opportunity because the Durand Cup is such a prestigious tournament. We respect Shillong Lajong, they've been an important figure in Indian football. But we've been working very hard, and now it's our time to get the job done," Naik said.While the fixture promises fierce competition, there remains a strong sense of mutual respect between the two teams, many of whose players have been teammates or opponents since their school days. Lajong captain Kenstar Kharshong expects an entertaining contest.
"They have some good and experienced players. I think it will be a very good match. I hope the supporters come and enjoy watching it," he said.
Preparations for the tournament have been underway for weeks at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. Pitch curator Uttam Kalita, who has overseen the playing surface for all three Durand Cup editions in Shillong, expressed confidence in the venue's readiness.
"Whenever matches are held here, our enthusiasm increases. It's our responsibility to make the ground look good, so we do everything we can," Kalita said, while refusing to predict a winner.
State Sports Council field officer Nicholas welcomed the return of the tournament, saying the stadium is built to host international-level matches and expressing hope that one of Meghalaya's clubs reaches the final.
For local organisers, the Durand Cup's return to Shillong for a third successive year is another sign of the city's growing importance on India's football map. Smita Chettri, whose agency has worked on all three editions, said expectations have risen with each tournament.
"Every year the expectations are higher. This is our third year and people have seen how good the previous editions were," she said.
With fans divided between Lajong's experience and Nongkseh's fairytale rise, anticipation is building across the city. Supporter Vebanshar Kharkongor believes the tournament has become much more than football."It gives Khasi players a chance to play with the big teams. Football connects families and friends here," he said, while backing Shillong Lajong to edge the contest on experience.
