SHILLONG, March 14: Governor Chandrashekhar H Vijayashankar on Friday launched a Mobile Food Processing Unit (MPU) at Lok Bhavan to support farmers and strengthen food processing capabilities across the Northeast.

The "processing on wheels" facility allows small and marginal farmers to process fruits and vegetables at their doorstep. The unit is equipped with micro and small-scale machinery designed to handle a variety of farm produce.
The project was jointly developed by the North East Centre for Technology Application and Reach (NECTAR), an autonomous body under the Ministry of Science and Technology, and the CSIR-Central Food Technological Research Institute (CFTRI), Mysuru.
The Governor commended NECTAR for bringing technology to the grassroots, noting that the MPU will empower local communities, enhance the value of agricultural produce, and create sustainable livelihoods for regional entrepreneurs.
NECTAR Director General Arun Kumar Sarma said the initiative reflects the organisation's commitment to using science and technology for regional development, particularly in rural and backward areas. Delivering the keynote address, CFTRI Director Giridhar Parvatham highlighted the role of technology-driven solutions in addressing regional challenges and promoting growth.
The launch was attended by representatives from the Directorate of Food Processing Meghalaya, the Meghalaya State Rural Livelihoods Society (MSRLS), the North Eastern Region Community Resource Management Society (NERCRMS), and the Institute of Bioresources and Sustainable Development (IBSD).
The programme concluded with the Governor flagging off the unit and conducting a walkthrough of the facility, where participants were briefed on its operational features and benefits.
