TURA, April 15: Following the growing demand for deletion of non-tribal names from the GHADC electoral rolls, a new demand has now surfaced for replacing the names of several villages that currently bear non-Garo names with names reflecting the indigenous Garo language and cultural identity.
In a press statement issued on Wednesday, the Niksamso Garo Community Organization (NGCO) emphasised that Garo Hills is not just a geographical area but a symbol of the Garo people's rich culture, heritage, and identity.
The NGCO specifically highlighted areas requiring urgent attention, including Tura's localities such as Araimile, Dermile, and Baromile, as well as Phulbari, Rajabala, Selsella, Baitbari, Gimaijhora, Miljumla, Batabari, Balachanda, Bajengdoba, Holdibari, and several other similar regions.
The NGCO has urged the GHADC to take immediate steps by identifying all villages with non-Garo names across Garo Hills and initiating the process of renaming them with authentic Garo language names.
