The Cat who Loved to Sing

The Cat who Loved to Sing

Shillong Times 1 day ago

- Christina K Sangma

Mallow was a small grey cat with bright green eyes, a crooked white whisker, and a rather unusual passion for singing.

From the moment she woke each morning, she seemed to have a melody waiting inside her. As the first sunlight slipped through the windows, Mallow would climb onto her favourite windowsill, curl her tail around her paws, lift her chin, and begin to sing. Her voice rose and fell in long, wandering meows that she believed were filled with music.
She sang to the pigeons resting on telephone wires and to the stray cats wandering along the alleyways. She sang when the rain fell against the windows and when the moon appeared above the rooftops. She even sang while waiting for dinner, although those songs were usually louder and far more dramatic. To Mallow, the world was full of things worth singing about, and she saw no reason to keep any of her songs to herself.
The humans around her, however, did not hear music. They heard noise.
Why is that cat meowing again? one person would complain. Another would groan when Mallow began singing late at night. Sometimes someone would bang on a wall or tell her to be quiet, and each time Mallow would stop and stare at them with wide, confused eyes. She could not understand what she had done wrong. She had only been singing about the rain, or the moon, or the wonderful smell of fish coming from the kitchen.
Gradually, Mallow began to sing less. She still had songs inside her, but she kept them hidden away. She hummed quietly when nobody was nearby and sang only in the softest voice she could manage. Sometimes she sat by the window and watched the bird's fly past, feeling a melody rise in her chest before swallowing it back down again. Perhaps, she began to think, she was not a singer after all. Perhaps she was simply a noisy cat.
Then one rainy afternoon, everything changed. Mallow found herself in a small animal shelter, surrounded by unfamiliar cats and the nervous sounds of animals waiting to be chosen. She was frightened and tired, and for several days she did not sing at all. Then, one afternoon, a family came through the shelter door. There was a woman with kind eyes, a man carrying a dripping umbrella, and a little girl wearing bright green rain boots.
Mallow watched them quietly from the corner of her enclosure. Something about the little girl made her feel brave. Before she could stop herself, a familiar melody began to rise inside her. She climbed onto the windowsill, lifted her chin, and sang.
Her voice echoed through the shelter in a long, dramatic series of meows. Mallow immediately froze, waiting for someone to tell her to stop. Instead, the little girl gasped with delight.
Did you hear that? she asked. She sings!
The woman smiled, and the man laughed warmly. They gathered around Mallow and listened as she sang again, this time with a little more confidence. The little girl sat beside her, completely enchanted.
That day, Mallow went home with them. In her new home, she was never told to be quiet. When she sang, they listened. Sometimes they even sang along.
Mallow had finally found her people-people who did not love her despite her song, but loved her along with it. And from that day onward, she sang as loudly as her little heart desired, knowing that somewhere, there were always people who would recognise your music and ask you to sing again.
