SHILLONG, April 24: The State Women's Wing of the Voice of the People Party (VPP) on Friday called on Meghalaya State Women Commission (MSWC) Chairperson Iamonlang Syiem to demand action against online advertisements allegedly linked to prostitution.
In a representation submitted to the MSCW, the delegation expressed concern over the increasing visibility of digital content promoting escort services in Meghalaya.
The women's wing stated that such advertisements pose a threat to the safety, dignity, and welfare of women and girls in the state.
VPP state women's wing president Phileta Syiem noted that several online platforms appear to be facilitating illegal activities under the guise of escort services.
She warned that the prevalence of such content suggests the growth of organised prostitution, which could tarnish Shillong's image.
The delegation further alleged that local women and girls are being registered on these platforms and that the services may be catering to clients in high-end hotels. They questioned the current level of monitoring and enforcement by authorities. Seeking clarification, the women's wing asked the Commission if it was aware of these advertisements and whether any data had been compiled regarding the number of women involved.
They urged the MSWC to coordinate with law enforcement agencies and digital platforms to identify and remove the objectionable content immediately.
They also called for stronger, sustained measures to prevent the misuse of online platforms and to protect vulnerable individuals from exploitation, ensuring a safer environment for women across the state.
