London, Aug 1: Former England captain Michael Vaughan believes Stephen Fleming could face a far tougher challenge if he takes up a coaching role in English cricket, saying the legendary New Zealander would no longer have the invaluable advantage of working alongside MS Dhoni, who has been instrumental in Chennai Super Kings' sustained success in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
Fleming and Dhoni have formed one of the most successful coach-captain partnerships in IPL history, guiding Chennai Super Kings (CSK) to multiple titles while establishing the franchise as one of the most consistent teams in the tournament. Their long-standing association has been widely credited for creating a culture built on stability, trust and smart decision-making.
While acknowledging Fleming's credentials as one of the finest coaches in world cricket, Vaughan said replicating that success elsewhere could prove difficult because of Dhoni's unique qualities as a leader.
"Stephen Fleming is very well respected, renowned for being a very good manager and tactician. I've seen him at the IPL, and one of the problems he might discover in English cricket is that we do not have an MS Dhoni to be his captain," Vaughan told The Telegraph.
Vaughan suggested that Dhoni's calm temperament, tactical awareness and ability to make decisive calls under pressure have significantly complemented Fleming's coaching methods over the years.The former India captain has shared a close working relationship with Fleming since the inaugural seasons of the IPL, with the duo consistently backing experienced players, remaining patient during difficult phases and avoiding impulsive decisions. That philosophy has helped CSK emerge as one of the league's most successful and respected franchises.
Vaughan, however, clarified that his remarks were not intended to diminish Fleming's coaching credentials. (Agencies)
