Wolves are relegated after Crystal Palace and West Ham draw

Shillong Times 1 week ago

London, April 21: West Ham drew at Crystal Palace 0-0, gaining an important point in its fight to avoid relegation and ensuring the demise of the Premier League's bottom club Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Wolves cannot amass enough points in its last five games to avoid the drop and will return to the Championship for the first time since 2018.
Relegation looked inevitable for the Midlands club for most of a woeful season but even a string of more encouraging performances over the last couple of months could not save it.
The end came far from home in a listless match in south London.
West Ham had the better of the opening exchanges but the scoreline remained goalless at halftime. Although Palace perked up in the second half it did not create many chances and neither goalkeeper was very busy.
The point was nevertheless welcomed by the Hammers, who moved two clear of Tottenham Hotspur in 18th place."A point at the end of the day isn't the worst thing in the world," captain Jarrod Bowen said.
"We're trying to keep West Ham in the Premier League. We can't rely on anyone else, we need to look at ourselves and keep fighting to stay in the Premier League." Palace, which has won only three of its last 26 Monday night games in the Premier League, remained in 13th.Goalkeeper Dean Henderson's shutout was Palace's 12th clean sheet of the season, a record bettered only by the top two Arsenal and Manchester City.
"(That record) is an unbelievable return for our league position," Henderson said. "The defensive unit is so good, anyone who steps in has been excellent. That's the foundations we've built and hopefully add some goals at the other end."
In the end, while the contest at Selhurst Park offered little in terms of attacking flair, its consequences were far more significant than the scoreline suggested. For West Ham, the solitary point could yet prove decisive in a tense relegation battle, a small but vital step in their bid to preserve top-flight status. For Crystal Palace, it was another night of defensive assurance but attacking frustration, a pattern that has defined much of their campaign. Meanwhile, for Wolverhampton Wanderers, the curtain has now fallen on a difficult season, their fate sealed with games to spare.
As the Premier League season edges towards its climax, the margins grow finer, the pressure heavier, and for clubs at both ends of the table, every point - no matter how hard-earned or unspectacular - carries the weight of survival, pride and the promise of another year among England's elite.
With the season entering its decisive phase, the battle at the bottom is shaping into a test of nerve as much as ability. West Ham will take quiet confidence from their resilience, knowing that even modest returns can tilt the balance in such a tight contest. Palace, comfortably placed in mid-table, will look to build on their defensive solidity while searching for greater cutting edge in attack. For Wolves, however, the focus now shifts to regrouping and rebuilding, as they prepare for life in the Championship. The final weeks promise drama, but for some, the outcome is already sealed, while for others, the fight goes on.
As the campaign draws ever closer to its conclusion, the contrasting emotions across the three clubs could not be more stark. West Ham, still hovering dangerously above the drop zone, know that grit and discipline will be their greatest allies in the weeks ahead, with each passing fixture carrying immense significance in their survival bid.
Crystal Palace, on the other hand, find themselves in a relatively stable position, yet aware that consistency - particularly in the attacking third - remains the missing piece in an otherwise organised and resolute setup. (AP)
