Today is indeed a landmark day for Indian aviation domain as the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has cleared Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) manufactured Dornier 228 for commercial flights. This is the first plane to be made in the country and has been already used by the defence forces. HAL can sell this 19 seater aircraft to any airlines in India. This is a fine flagship product of Narendra Modi government's ambitious UDAN scheme.

Both type certification and certification of airworthiness have been granted to this Dornier 228. One can only hope that this will usher in a new era in Indian civil aviation industry. There are chances that HAL may sell this plane for civil use to neighbouring countries such as Nepal and Sri Lanka.

This Dornier 228 is a multi-purpose light transport aircraft. Not only it is capable of meeting manifold requirements of utility and commuter transport and also third level services and air-taxi operations along with coast guard duties and maritime surveillance. The plane can reach a maximum speed of 428 kmph and can easily cover a range of 700 km. Many aviation experts believe that Dornier 228 can play a stellar role in pollution prevention and executive transport.
