Welcome Vijay Keshav Gokhale - India's Next Foreign Secretary

Ranabir Bhattacharyya

1981 batch officer of Indian Foreign Service (IFS) Vijay Keshav Gokhale has been named as the next foreign secretary of India. He will be taking over the responsibility from S Jaishankar who will be ending his tenure on January 31st.

Incidentally, 58-year-old Vijay Keshav Gokhale is considered an expert on China who played a key role in Indo-China negotiations in resolving 73 days long Doklam standoff between Indian Army and Chinese People's Liberation Army.

Presently, he is the secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs and was also India's ambassador to China from January 20, 2016, to October 21, 2017. He has also previously worked as a top envoy in Germany for three years between 2013 to 2016 and has been integral to Indian missions in Hong Kong, Hanoi, Beijing and New York.

Having him at the helm of affairs certainly highlights the importance of bilateral relations with China at this crucial juncture of time. No doubt, he is a trusted hand in the diplomatic circle and his experience will be an asset to India in the days to come.
