Four Players Who Could Face Axe If Rohit Sharma Leads India At Asia Cup 2020
In the Asia Cup 2018, India's current captain Virat Kohli was rested while Rohit Sharma was handed over the captaincy for the tournament. Rohit led the team to lift the trophy after beating Bangladesh by three wickets.
As this year too, there so much cricket lined up because of the postponement amid coronavirus and Kohli can be given rest too. Thus, if the scenario remains the same, Virat's deputy Rohit Sharma will be again given the captaincy in the upcoming Asia Cup.
The mega event is scheduled in September this year. The 32-year-old captaincy will benefit some while some surely have to face disadvantages.
Here, we have mentioned four players who are likely to face difficulties if indeed Rohit Sharma leads India against its neighbours.
Here are four players who could suffer if Rohit Sharma dons the captain's hat at Asia Cup 2020:
4) Prithvi ShawPrithvi Shaw (Credits: Twitter)
Prithvi Shaw will have to face some tough times during the tournament. In the last tour of New Zealand, the opening batsman gained the place in the Indian team after Shikhar Dhawan was ruled out because of injury.
However, the youngster could not impress with his innings.
As usual, he hit big boundaries and lost his wicket in the bouncy pitches of New Zealand. With Shikhar Dhawan getting fully fit, Shaw might get fewer chances or might have to bench in the whole tournament if in the squad.
3) Shubman Gill
As India's both regular opener has recovered from injury, Prithvi Shaw's former U-19 partner Shubhman Gill will have to face the consequences of the same. Shubhman Gill was also included in Indian squad for the New Zealand tour as the backup opener but was not given chance.
The right-hand batsman was also in the ODI squad against South Africa as Rohit Sharma was on the break and recovering from the injury.
However, he could not get the chance because the series was called off. And, now there are fewer opportunities for him.
Thus, he might have to warm the bench if he is named in the Asia Cup squad. The youngster has played only two ODIs so far and scored 16 runs. With less experience at an international platform, he can gain only a place as a reserve opener.
2) Rishabh Pant
The wicketkeeper-batsman has already lost his place from the shorter formats after KL Rahul took over his job.
Unfortunately, Rishabh Pant sustained an injury in the ODI series against Australia. He was rested for one ODI which allowed KL Rahul to don the gloves.
Rahul went on to impress with his performance not only with the bat but also with wicketkeeping. Since then, Pant is dropped from the playing XI in the shorter formats.
The Indian management will back KL Rahul as wicketkeeper-batsman, which would further limit opportunities for Pant. So, it will difficult to break for him in the playing XI.
1) Kuldeep Yadav
Kuldeep Yadav is not having a good time in the recent past. He is low on confidence while also losing his capability to take wickets.
The spinner was badly beaten in the first ODI against New Zealand though he picked two wickets. After this, he was dropped from the remaining two ODI matches.
The 25-year-old has been unable to perform as per expectations, and this could hamper his chances of playing at the Asia Cup 2020.
The team would like to go with Yuzvendra Chahal and Ravindra Jadeja as the two spinners.
Chahal is currently in form and has shown some great skills in fielding as well. On the other hand, Jadeja has come out better with the bat.
So, Rohit Sharma is expected to give fewer chances to the chinaman.
