The Union government has approved Rs 461 crore for slope protection, stabilisation and repair works at 20 landslide-prone locations along major national highways in Uttarakhand.
The announcement was made by Nitin Gadkari on 4 April, who said the funding would support preventive engineering measures at vulnerable stretches frequently affected by landslides, particularly during the monsoon season.
Of the total allocation, Rs 233 crore has been earmarked for works at 17 sensitive locations along National Highway 134 in Uttarkashi district. The highway is a crucial route for pilgrims travelling to Yamunotri, one of the four shrines that form the Char Dham Yatra.
The road connects the shrine via Dharasu and Kuthnaur and experiences frequent disruptions due to unstable slopes and falling debris in several sections.
Officials said that landslides along this corridor often block traffic and create safety risks for pilgrims, tourists and local residents. The proposed measures are expected to strengthen slopes, improve drainage and reduce the likelihood of road damage in future.
An additional Rs 228 crore has been approved for mitigation works at three landslide-prone locations along the Tawaghat-Ghatiyabagad section of National Highway 9 in Pithoragarh district.
This stretch is particularly important for connectivity to remote Himalayan areas and border regions, making uninterrupted road access vital for both civilian travel and logistical movement.
Authorities said the planned interventions will focus on strengthening vulnerable slopes, improving road drainage and implementing structural protections to prevent recurring damage caused by landslides.
