ICAR Forms Special Task Force To Safeguard India's Agricultural Resilience Amid Global Geopolitical Uncertainties

The Indian Council of Agricultural Research has established a high-level Special Task Force to address emerging global challenges and formulate strategies to safeguard India's agricultural sector.

The move comes amid rising geopolitical uncertainties affecting global food and fertiliser supply chains, particularly disruptions around critical maritime corridors and energy markets.

During the inaugural meeting of the committee chaired by M L Jat, Secretary of the Department of Agricultural Research and Education and Director General of ICAR, a comprehensive framework was outlined to ensure national food and input security.

The task force aims to develop data-driven strategies to maintain agricultural stability and ensure uninterrupted food and input availability for farmers across the country.

A key priority involves intensifying the 'Mera Gaon Mera Gaurav' campaign to enhance farmer outreach.

The initiative will prioritise 100 aspirational districts, utilising existing organisational structures to provide complete packages of agricultural practices and build confidence at the grassroots level.

Dedicated officers have been assigned across various divisions to track weekly progress and align efforts under a unified action plan.

The task force is also launching a dedicated campaign to promote balanced use of fertilisers and bio-inputs. District-level assessments will be conducted to rationalise fertiliser consumption in key crops such as wheat and rice, improving resource efficiency.

Additionally, the panel plans to scale up technological solutions, including Direct Seeding of Rice, supported by real-time advisories under strengthened agrometeorology programmes.

The Special Task Force will convene as situational exigencies demand, leveraging institutional feedback mechanisms and internal expertise to provide data-driven inputs to the government.

This strategic response reflects India's proactive approach to navigating global uncertainties whilst strengthening domestic agricultural resilience and protecting farmer livelihoods in an increasingly volatile international environment.
