The challenge focuses on leveraging machine learning algorithms to predict cognitive impairment in elderly populations.
CBR has been conducting some of India's largest longitudinal studies on brain ageing, including the CBR-SANSCOG study involving approximately 10,000 rural participants aged 45 and above from Karnataka's Kolar district, and the CBR-TLSA study tracking 1,000 urban residents in Bangalore.
These studies collect comprehensive clinical, neurocognitive, genetic and neuroimaging data at regular intervals.
The centre aims to preserve cognitive functions during ageing and minimise the burden of neurodegenerative diseases through prevention and early diagnosis.
With India's elderly population expected to reach 320 million by 2050, dementia and Alzheimer's disease represent a growing socioeconomic challenge. Current research shows that brain changes leading to dementia begin at least two decades before clinical symptoms appear, making early detection crucial.
CBR has previously collaborated with Wipro on AI-driven health innovations and signed partnerships with the UK Dementia Research Institute and Gates Ventures.
The centre, established with philanthropic support from Infosys co-founder Kris Gopalakrishnan, conducts cutting-edge translational research to understand normal and pathological brain aging.
The AI challenge represents a significant step towards developing scalable diagnostic tools for India's diverse population.
By integrating expertise in neuroscience, data science and machine learning, the initiative seeks to create composite biomarkers for early dementia detection and design interventions that could prevent or postpone cognitive decline in at-risk individuals.
