The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways has signed a Plan of Implementation with the Korea International Cooperation Agency to strengthen India's shipbuilding ecosystem through structured skill development and technology collaboration.
The partnership marks a major milestone under India's ambitious Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047, aimed at positioning the country as a global maritime powerhouse.
A key highlight of the initiative is the proposed establishment of a Shipbuilding Workforce Development and Technology Cooperation Centre, which will serve as a hub for advanced training, research, and innovation in shipbuilding.
The centre will introduce global best practices from South Korea - one of the world's leading shipbuilding nation - into India's maritime training ecosystem.
The collaboration will support workforce planning by assessing current and future skill requirements in India's shipbuilding and ship repair sectors.
Training programmes will be aligned with industry needs, ensuring a steady pipeline of skilled professionals to meet growing domestic and international demand.
The initiative aims to enhance institutional capacity by upgrading existing maritime training institutes, developing standardised curricula, and facilitating knowledge exchange between Indian and Korean experts.
The partnership is also expected to attract investments, encourage technology transfer, and improve productivity and efficiency across Indian shipyards.
India currently accounts for less than one percent of global shipbuilding output, currently ranking approximately 18th worldwide.
The government has set ambitious targets to become one of the top five shipbuilding nations globally by 2047, leveraging international partnerships to acquire technology and expertise whilst capitalising on India's abundant workforce.
