Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw reviewed the progress of Kavach yesterday (26 March), directing officials to accelerate deployment of the indigenously developed Automatic Train Protection system.
The meeting focused on leveraging advanced technology to ensure more efficient train operations across the national network.
Indian Railways has introduced several cutting-edge enhancements in Kavach, most notably the Universal Braking Algorithm, which standardises braking curves across different manufacturers.
This innovation ensures interoperability and eliminates repetitive trials, marking a significant step towards faster implementation of Kavach 4.0.
Significant upgrades in baseline software, AI-driven design automation, and integration interfaces for locomotives, interlocking systems, and track machines are further strengthening system robustness.
A centralised monitoring platform, SURAKSHA, is being developed as a unified Operations Management System to enable real-time monitoring and predictive maintenance of Kavach installations.
So far, Kavach has been installed on 3,103 route kilometres, while work is currently in progress on 24,427 route kilometres, including high-density and high-utilisation corridors.
The railways recently commissioned Kavach on 190 route kilometres of the Prayagraj-Kanpur section of the Delhi-Howrah high-density corridor.
Supporting infrastructure deployment has also accelerated, with optical fibre cable laid over 8,921 kilometres, supported by 1,183 telecom towers and Kavach data centres across 767 stations.
Kavach has been installed on 4,277 locomotives, with work in progress on 8,979 locomotives.
To further expand implementation, the railway is planning to expand the Kavach network by 9,000 route kilometres in the next two years and thereafter expects growth up to 10,000 route kilometres per year.
The system, which automatically applies brakes if drivers fail to act and helps trains operate safely during low-visibility conditions, represents a major advancement in railway safety infrastructure under the Make in India initiative.
