The Jharkhand government is preparing to introduce electric buses across key districts as part of a broader strategy to modernise public transport.
Transport Secretary Rajeev Ranjan announced that the government is finalising plans to procure between 40 and 50 electric buses in the initial phase of the programme.
Speaking after inspecting the district transport office in Bokaro, he said the first batch of EV buses would be deployed in select districts to encourage environmentally friendly public transportation and reduce dependence on conventional fuel-powered vehicles.
The state government is preparing to procure between 40 and 50 electric buses, with the first phase expected to introduce four to five EV buses in major districts to encourage cleaner and more sustainable public transport.
Alongside the rollout of electric buses, the transport department is also drafting a long-term plan to establish EV charging stations and related infrastructure to support the transition towards cleaner mobility solutions.
The state government is simultaneously focusing on improving transport access in rural areas under the Mukhyamantri Gram Gaadi Yojana.
The scheme is expected to provide safer and more accessible travel facilities for villagers and schoolchildren commuting between rural and urban regions.
Ranjan said transport routes under the scheme would be identified separately for each district, while buses would be monitored through GPS-based tracking systems.
He added that operator subsidies would be disbursed through district transport offices in accordance with existing norms, alongside efforts to expand digitised and faceless services to improve transparency and make public services more accessible for citizens.
During the Bokaro inspection, the transport secretary also indicated that the existing district transport office could be shifted to a new location as part of administrative restructuring and infrastructure upgrades.
