The next phase of the Kanpur Metro is moving closer to completion, with trial operations expected to begin soon on the downline of the Corridor-1 balance section between Kanpur Central and Naubasta.
Officials from Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Limited confirmed that installation of the third rail system on the downline has been completed.
The section was energised for the first time on 2 April, marking a key milestone in preparing the corridor for operational trials. Following the initial charging, the system will now maintain a continuous power supply to support upcoming testing activities.
Once the test runs begin, the metro authority will carry out a series of technical checks to ensure the track, signalling, power supply and other operational systems function smoothly before passenger services are introduced on the extended stretch.
The upcoming extension towards Naubasta is expected to significantly enhance connectivity in the southern parts of Kanpur, one of the state's largest urban centres.
Meanwhile, testing activities are also progressing on the up-line of the balance section between Kanpur Central and Naubasta. Engineers are carrying out system checks and safety assessments to ensure the corridor meets operational standards before the metro is opened for commuters.
Currently, 15 km of Line 1 connecting IIT Kanpur with Kanpur Central Station is operational.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated an additional 5 km section on 30 May 2025, extending services from the initial 9 km priority corridor launched in December 2021.
The Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation is working to make the entire Line 1 fully operational as soon as possible.
Separately, work has been completed on the 4.80 km underground section of Corridor-2 between Rawatpur and Double Pulia, with Tunnel Boring Machine Parvati achieving the final breakthrough.
The 32.4 km Kanpur Metro network aims to transform urban mobility across the city, with Corridor-2 extending 8.6 km from Agriculture University to Barra-8.
