The foundation stone for the Kota-Bundi Greenfield Airport was laid today at the new airport site in Shambhupura in the presence of Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma, and Union Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu.
A video message from Prime Minister Narendra Modi was also broadcast during the programme.
Addressing the gathering, the Prime Minister highlighted that today is a day of new hope for Kota, Bundi, Baran, and Jhalawar as the modern airport, built at a cost of approximately 1,500 crore rupees, begins to take shape. While extending his best wishes to the people of the region, PM Modi remarked, "This modern airport is going to give new momentum to the development of the entire region in the coming times."
Recalling his visit in November 2023, the Prime Minister expressed satisfaction that the promise made to the people regarding the airport is now being fulfilled.
Transitioning from the previous inconvenience of traveling to Jaipur or Jodhpur for flights, PM Modi asserted, "When this airport starts, travel will be easy and trade will grow rapidly in the entire area including Kota."
The Kota-Bundi Greenfield Airport will be constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 1,507 crore and will have a peak-hour capacity of around 1,000 passengers with annual capacity of 2 Million Passengers Per Annum (MPPA),.
The project will also include a 20,000 square metre terminal building, a 3,200-metre-long and 45-metre-wide runway, parking facilities for Airbus A-321 category aircraft, and seven apron bays for aircraft parking.
It will also include two Link Taxiways, ATC cum Technical Block, Fire Station, car park and allied works.
The airport is expected to significantly improve air connectivity for Kota, Bundi and the entire Hadoti region, boosting tourism, business and regional development.
The airport is planned to be built at Shambhupura village in Kota district, approximately 15 kilometres from Kota, 20 kilometres from Bundi and 50 kilometres from Rawatbhata in Rajasthan, and will be built by the Airports Authority of India.
Kota is renowned as the Educational Coaching Hub of India, and the Government of Rajasthan has transferred 440.06 hectares of land to AAI for development of the greenfield airport, suitable for operation of A-321 type aircraft.
The existing Kota Airport is under the ownership of Airports Authority of India (AAI). It comprises a runway (08/26) of dimensions 1220 m x 38 m, suitable for Code 'B' aircraft (such as DO-228), and an apron capable of accommodating two such aircraft.
The terminal building spans an area of 400 sqm and is capable of handling 50 passengers during peak hours.
The existing airport cannot be developed for commercial operations due to inadequate land availability and urbanization around the airport.
