The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) has finished 92 per cent of the 23.8-km Vadape-Thane Road expansion, with most major civil works apart from the railway overbridge slated for completion by August 2026.
Being built along the Old Mumbai-Nashik National Highway, the project seeks to relieve persistent congestion on one of the region's busiest freight and commuter routes linking Thane, Bhiwandi and Nashik.
After completion, the road will become an eight-lane corridor flanked by two-lane service roads on either side. The upgrade is expected to smoothen traffic movement, especially for heavy commercial vehicles heading towards Bhiwandi's warehouse cluster.
The latest progress report shows that 22.46 km of the 23.8-km main carriageway, or 94 per cent, is ready. Service road construction is also close to finishing, with 17.40 km of 18.35 km, or 95 per cent, done.
Three major bridges, the Kalwa Creek Bridge, Kasheli Creek Bridge and the Vadape Flyover, have been built.
The 84-metre railway overbridge remains the sole pending structure at 72 per cent completion. Officials said girder launching started once the Railway Department gave clearance on 25 May, with the structure expected to be finished by September 2026.
The project also features 10 vehicular underpasses to remove traffic bottlenecks. Seven of these, at Yewai, Walshind, Sonale, Saravali, Dive LVUP, Dive VUP and Kharegaon, are complete.
The Pimplas VUP is at 75 per cent, Ovali VUP at 82 per cent and Mankoli-Motagaon VUP at 75 per cent, with the latter two targeted for August.
Forming part of the traffic dispersal plan tied to the Mumbai-Nagpur Samruddhi Mahamarg, the Rs 1,182 crore project is being carried out under the Hybrid Annuity Model. NHAI will fund it upfront and repay MSRDC across 15 years.
