Mumbai's metro network expanded significantly on Tuesday with the launch of new sections of Mumbai Metro Line 9 and Mumbai Metro Line 2B, strengthening connectivity across key suburban areas and advancing the vision of a fully integrated transport system in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
The first phase of Metro Line 9, linking Dahisar East with Kashigaon in Thane district, was inaugurated by CM Devendra Fadnavis, Deputy CM Eknath Shinde, and Sunetra Pawar, as well as other officials, who were present at the event.
Passenger services on the new stretch will begin from 8 April. The 5.6 km elevated corridor includes four stations - Dahisar East, Pandurangwadi, Miragaon and Kashigaon - and represents the first metro line to enter Thane district.
The elevated corridor includes four stations - Dahisar East, Pandurangwadi, Miragaon and Kashigaon."This metro will allow us to complete a journey, which currently takes one to two hours, in about 30 minutes," Fadnavis said.
Metro Line 9 will operate in integration with Mumbai Metro Line 7, creating a direct connection between Andheri East and Mira-Bhayandar via Kashigaon.
The integrated Line 7-Line 9 corridor will span 19.79 km between Gundavali and Kashigaon, with peak-hour frequencies of under six minutes and services operating between 5:50 am and 11 pm.
At the same time, the first phase of Metro Line 2B was also inaugurated, bringing metro connectivity to eastern suburbs such as Chembur and Mankhurd.
The Phase 1 section covers a 5.4 km stretch between Diamond Garden and Mandale and includes five stations - Diamond Garden, Shivaji Chowk, BSNL Metro, Mankhurd and Mandale.
Services on this section will start from 8 April and operate from 6 am to around 10:30 pm with a frequency of about nine-and-a-half minutes, running approximately 209 services daily.
CM Devendra Fadnavis, Deputy CM Eknath Shinde, and Sunetra Pawar riding the Metro 2B Line. The new metro stretch will also improve access to prominent local landmarks in Chembur, including Diamond Garden, K Star Mall, St. Anthony's High School, RCF Colony, the Fine Arts Society and Chembur Railway Station.
Once the entire 23.6 km elevated Metro Line 2B corridor with 20 stations becomes operational, it will connect multiple transport networks including the Western and Eastern Express Highways, suburban railways, the Monorail and several metro lines such as Mumbai Metro Line 2A, Mumbai Metro Line 3 and Mumbai Metro Line 4.
Authorities expect the completed corridor to reduce travel time along the route by as much as 75 per cent.
With the launch of the new sections, Lines 2A and 7 will now operate as independent corridors.
However, Line 7 will remain integrated with Line 9, enabling seamless connectivity across major suburban stretches. Interchange facilities at Dahisar station will continue to allow passengers to transfer between Lines 2A and 7 without exiting the paid area.
