Authorities are planning an extensive underground pedestrian network linked to Mumbai Metro Line 3, also known as the Aqua Line.

According to a Mid-day report, the proposed plan involves a series of subterranean walkways branching out from key stations to nearby office complexes, public spaces and transport hubs.

The underground corridors are expected to extend from stations at Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) and the Science Centre Mumbai area, connecting commuters directly with important destinations such as the Nehru Planetarium and the Worli Promenade.

In total, the proposed network is expected to span close to three km of pedestrian infrastructure.

To move the project forward, Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited has invited bids for design and project management consultancy services for constructing these underground subways and station vestibules.

The plan includes linking metro stations directly with surrounding commercial buildings and public spaces to create seamless pedestrian movement.

According to preliminary plans, two tunnels will originate from the Science Centre station.

One of these is expected to run approximately 1.1 km towards the Worli promenade through the Mahalaxmi Racecourse area, while another 500-metre corridor will connect the station with the Nehru Planetarium.

Separately, a longer underground passage of around 1.4 km is proposed from BKC station to link with the planned high-speed rail terminal near the Diamond Bourse.

Urban mobility experts say such infrastructure could transform the way commuters move through dense business districts.

The underground links will also align with transit-oriented development policies encouraging developers to physically connect buildings to nearby metro stations.
