Construction on Mumbai's long-awaited Metro Line 6 has entered a critical phase, with work set to begin on installing steel girders over the Western Railway corridor, which is one of the final engineering challenges holding up the project, according to a report by Mid-day.
The 15.31 km elevated corridor, linking Swami Samarth Nagar in Andheri to Vikhroli on the Eastern Express Highway, has seen most of its civil work completed.
However, sections requiring crossings over both Western and Central Railway lines have remained pending, making the upcoming girder launch a significant milestone.
"Work will continue for nearly 10 hours from 10.15 pm on 25 April to 8.15 am on 26 April. This will be a significant step in completion of line since other civil work is now complete. Blocks will be undertaken between Jogeshwari and Ram Mandir stations on 6th line and at Dahisar for launching of girders. Some suburban services will remain cancelled during the block period. The detailed list of cancelled suburban services will be available at all stations on the suburban section," a Western Railway spokesperson was quoted as saying in the report.
The line, also known as the Pink Line, will run along key stretches including Jogeshwari, the Western Express Highway and Powai, providing a crucial east-west link between the city's two arterial highways.
Line 6 will connect with Yellow Line-2A at Bangur Nagar, Red Line-7 at JVLR, Aqua Line-3 at Aarey Depot and Green Line-4 at Gandhi Nagar.
With 13 stations along its route, the corridor is expected to ease congestion on the busy Jogeshwari-Vikhroli Link Road and offer faster transit options across Mumbai's suburbs.
