Mumbai Monorail Set For Restart After Months-Long Shutdown, Final Safety Clearance Expected Next Week

Mumbai Monorail Set For Restart After Months-Long Shutdown, Final Safety Clearance Expected Next Week

Swarajya 2 weeks ago

The long-suspended Mumbai Monorail network is expected to resume passenger operations by the end of the month, with authorities preparing for a final safety inspection following months of technical upgrades and infrastructure modernisation.

The 20 km corridor, operated by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority, has remained non-operational since September 2025 after recurring technical glitches and service disruptions forced the suspension of services.

The monorail route connects Sant Gadge Maharaj Chowk and Chembur through 17 stations and serves commuters travelling across central and eastern parts of Mumbai.

According to reports, most of the modernisation work has now been completed, with only the final approval process pending before services can restart.

Retired Metro Railway Safety Commissioner Padam Singh Baghel has been appointed to conduct the mandatory inspection of the upgraded corridor next week. Passenger operations are expected to resume once the final certification is granted.

Officials said extensive technical evaluations and infrastructure checks have already been carried out successfully during the shutdown period.

The network has undergone major system upgrades, including the replacement of ageing technology and improvements to operational and maintenance infrastructure.

As part of preparations for the relaunch, MMRDA has appointed Power Mech Projects as the private operator responsible for running and maintaining the monorail system over the next five years.

The company will manage train operations, station services, depot functions and maintenance activities across the corridor.

The fleet has also been strengthened with the induction of 10 new monorail rakes, all of which have completed trial runs and operational testing.

Independent inspection agency Bureau Veritas has already carried out an Independent Safety Assessment and cleared the upgraded system.
