The Metro Line 5 project linking Thane and Bhiwandi is moving closer to becoming operational, with services on the corridor expected to begin by January 2027, The Free Press Journal reported .
Construction work on the Thane-Bhiwandi stretch is likely to be wrapped up by December 2026, according to officials who recently conducted a joint inspection of the project.
BJP MLA Mahesh Choughule, who reviewed the ongoing work, confirmed the timeline but noted that a decision on whether the Bhiwandi-Kalyan extension will be built underground or as an elevated stretch is still pending. This could affect the broader project schedule.
A high-level meeting was held at the Bhiwandi Municipal Corporation headquarters ahead of the inspection, chaired by Mayor Narayan Chaudhary.
Municipal Commissioner Anmol Sagar and officials from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) and metro authorities were also present.
Discussions covered the metro project's status, ongoing infrastructure work, and traffic management planning for the city.
Officials subsequently inspected construction progress along the Anjurphata to Dhamankar Naka stretch and directed departments to speed up pending work.
Choughule highlighted that the metro corridor will significantly reduce Bhiwandi's traffic congestion and provide residents with a reliable and efficient public transport option.
He also flagged the need to address related civic issues such as sanitation near metro zones and road construction in widened areas.
MMRDA officials said an estimated Rs 3,771 crore will be needed to complete associated development works, to be carried out in three phases.
Mayor Chaudhary said metro authorities should take responsibility for cleanliness in metro areas once operations commence, while Commissioner Sagar discussed revenue possibilities through advertisement hoardings within metro premises.
