The Centre has approved a new Mainline Electric Multiple Unit (MEMU) train service between Delhi and Faridabad.
The approval was granted by Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw following a request from Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta.
Welcoming the decision, Gupta thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Railway Minister, stating that the new service is expected to provide significant relief to thousands of passengers who travel between Delhi and Faridabad daily for work, education, business and other routine activities.
According to the Delhi government, commuters on the corridor have long struggled with overcrowded transport systems, delays and limited travel options due to increasing passenger demand.
The new MEMU service is expected to improve accessibility while offering a quicker and more affordable mode of public transport for regular travellers.
The Delhi government has been coordinating with the Centre to strengthen transport infrastructure and address growing mobility challenges across Delhi and adjoining NCR regions.
MEMU trains are specially designed electric passenger services operated by Indian Railways for short- and medium-distance routes.
Unlike conventional trains, these services do not rely on separate locomotives and instead use self-propelled motor coaches, allowing smoother acceleration and improved operational efficiency on routes with frequent halts.
